How we calculate

Exchange rates and fees change — figures as of October 2026.

  • Exchange rate: USD 1 = RM 4.08 (Bank Negara Malaysia, 1 October 2026). Amounts are rounded to $100, smaller ones to $10.

  • Living costs cover 12 months a year: RM 1,200–1,800 a month for food, transport and personal spending (MAHSA estimate) plus housing — the MAHSA residence at RM 500–1,200 a month and a RM 500 registration fee, or rent of $100–300 and utilities of $40–65 a month (EMGS).
  • The visa figure covers EMGS fees for private institutions, the medical check and insurance in year one, then the yearly Student Pass renewal with insurance.
  • University application and registration fees are estimated at RM 1,450–2,900, paid once.
  • Not included: flights, textbooks, the refundable personal bond of RM 1,500, scholarships and discounts.

One-off and yearly costs

Visa, insurance and fees on top of tuition

Student visas for Malaysia are handled by EMGS, the official service for international students. The fees below apply to private institutions in Peninsular Malaysia, where MAHSA University and City University Malaysia are located (EMGS schedule of 23 June 2026).

How tuition fees are paid

  • To the university only

Tuition fees are transferred straight to the university’s account shown on its invoice. City University Malaysia states clearly that no fees should be paid to anyone except the university.

  • In ringgit

Fees are set in RM. If the bank deducts charges or the exchange rate moves, the student pays the shortfall.

  • By year or by semester

At MAHSA, international students pay at the start of the academic year and can ask for instalments in advance. At City University Malaysia, fees are paid each semester before classes start.
