Study in the USA

Study in the USA from Uzbekistan: college from $8,050 a year, the 2+2 route and universities

The most affordable way to an American bachelor’s degree is to start at a two-year public community college and transfer into the third year of a university. Here are three colleges — in New York, Ohio and Florida — with their fees, the F-1 visa steps and the rules on working while you study.

Why · USA

Why students choose this country

  1. 01

The 2+2 route: college first, then university

For the first two years you study at a college and earn an associate degree of 60 credits. Then you transfer into the third year of a university and finish a bachelor’s degree two years later. Tuition at the colleges below is $8,050–10,000 a year.

  2. 02

    Transfer under signed agreements

Valencia College graduates with an A.A. or an articulated A.S. degree are guaranteed admission to the University of Central Florida through DirectConnect (though not to every major). BMCC graduates have the right to transfer to a City University of New York (CUNY) college. Cincinnati State has transfer agreements with more than 20 four-year institutions.

  3. 03

English at B1 level is enough to start

Cincinnati State accepts IELTS 5.0 and Valencia College IELTS 5.5; both take the Duolingo English Test from 80. Since spring 2024 BMCC has not required a certificate: after admission you sit a placement test and start English courses at your level.

  4. 04

    On-campus jobs and OPT

During the semester an F-1 student may work on campus up to 20 hours a week. After graduation you can work in your field for up to 12 months on OPT, and STEM graduates can extend it by another 24 months.

  5. 05

    Two intakes a year

College terms start in late August and in January. BMCC, for example, takes I-20 applications until 15 June for the fall semester and until 15 November for spring. Start early: CUNY alone can take up to three months to review an international application.

  6. 06

    The city sets your budget

BMCC estimates living costs in New York at $36,454 a year, while room and board in Cincinnati come to about $17,928 a year. The city also decides how much money you must show in the bank for the visa.

BMCC, New York — tuition
$8,050 a year ($320 per credit)

≈ $9,400 a year ($391 per credit)

Living and other costs (college estimates)
$24,147 a year in Cincinnati, $36,454 in New York

For the I-20 a college asks you to show money for one year of study and living: $44,504 at BMCC, $34,192 at Cincinnati State. College fees come from their official websites; university fees are OPAL’s guide figures, and we will work out the exact amount for your programme.

Visa

The F-1 student visa

You apply for the F-1 visa after admission: the college issues a Form I-20, and a consular officer decides at an interview at the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent.

  • The college issues the I-20 after admission and a check of your finances: you need a bank statement from you or a sponsor for the amount the college sets.
  • Next come the SEVIS I-901 fee ($350), the DS-160 form, the $185 visa fee and an interview booking. The interview is required, and you apply in your country of citizenship or residence.
  • Your social media accounts must be set to public during vetting — this applies to all F, M and J visa applicants.
  • The officer checks that you are going to study, can pay for it and plan to return. Refusals happen, so we prepare for the interview in advance.
  • You may enter the U.S. no earlier than 30 days before classes start.
  • The 2026 situation: Uzbekistan is not among the 39 countries whose nationals have faced U.S. entry restrictions since 1 January 2026. The pause on immigrant visas from 21 January 2026 does cover Uzbekistan, but it does not apply to F-1 student visas.
  • Work: on campus up to 20 hours a week during the semester; off campus only through the CPT and OPT training programmes.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to study in the USA from Uzbekistan?
College tuition is $8,050–10,000 a year; at a university a bachelor’s starts from $15,000 a year and a master’s from $25,000. Housing and food come on top: about $24,000 a year in Cincinnati and $36,454 in New York. You must show the first year’s money in the bank before the visa. We will work out the exact budget for your programme in a consultation.
Can I get in without IELTS?
At BMCC, yes, for now: no certificate is required, and after admission you take a placement test and join English courses at your level. Cincinnati State and Valencia College accept IELTS 5.0–5.5, TOEFL or the Duolingo English Test from 80. A university bachelor’s usually needs IELTS 5.5 or higher, a master’s 6.5 or higher, and some programmes also ask for the SAT.
What is 2+2, and is the transfer to a university guaranteed?
It means two years at a college (associate degree) and two years at a university (bachelor’s degree). Only specific agreements give guarantees: Valencia’s DirectConnect to the University of Central Florida, and BMCC graduates’ right to transfer to a CUNY college. Even then your major is not guaranteed, and a university outside an agreement may not accept all your credits — BMCC says so plainly. That is why we plan the transfer from the first semester.
What is the best age to go?
We recommend going for a bachelor’s at 18–21 and for a master’s before 28. This is our working guideline, not a law: at the interview the officer looks first at your study goals and finances. If you are still at school, start with our plan for studying abroad after school.
Can I work while I study?
Yes, within F-1 rules: on campus up to 20 hours a week during the semester, off campus only through the CPT and OPT training programmes. After graduation OPT gives up to 12 months of work in your field, plus 24 months for STEM. A part-time job will not pay your tuition: you must show a year’s money in advance.
Are there U.S. visa restrictions for Uzbek citizens in 2026?
There is no ban on student visas: Uzbekistan is not among the 39 countries whose nationals have faced U.S. entry restrictions since 1 January 2026. From 21 January 2026 the U.S. paused immigrant visas for nationals of 75 countries, Uzbekistan included, but this does not affect F-1 student visas. The visa bond applies only to B-1/B-2 visitor visas and is not required of Uzbek citizens. Rules change often, so we will check your case before you apply.
Are there scholarships for college?
There are few for international students: BMCC, for example, publishes a list of external scholarships for international students, all of them competitive. Plan your budget without a grant and treat any discount as a bonus. For other options see scholarships to study abroad.
What comes after college?
Two routes: transfer into the third year of a university and earn a bachelor’s degree two years later, or work in your field on OPT for up to 12 months. You can combine them, as OPT is available at each level of study. We help you pick transfer universities in your first year.
