Why · Germany

Why students choose this country

  1. 01

    English-taught degrees

At BSBI, University of Europe, Gisma and Constructor University, bachelor’s and master’s programmes are taught in English. You don’t need German to get in, but it helps with part-time jobs and everyday life.

  2. 02

Public universities with little or no tuition

In most German states public universities charge no tuition, only a semester contribution. There are exceptions: Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester, and the Technical University of Munich from €2,000. We also help students apply to public universities.

  3. 03

    Part-time work while you study

Non-EU students can work 140 full or 280 half days a year under the rules in force since 1 March 2024. It helps with living costs, but it won’t pay your tuition.

  4. 04

18 months to find a job

After graduating from a German university you can get an 18-month residence permit to find a job that matches your degree. During that time you may work without restrictions.

  5. 05

    Several intakes a year

Private universities don’t only start in autumn: BSBI takes students in February, May and October, Gisma in January, April, July and October, and University of Europe in Berlin in January, March, July and September.

  6. 06

    One-year master’s

With a four-year bachelor’s (240 ECTS), some private universities let you take a 60 ECTS master’s in 12 months. At Gisma it costs €16,250 for the whole programme, at University of Europe from €9,263 a year.

Budget

How much it costs to study in Germany

Guide figures for 2026/27, taken from the universities’ official sites and the German Embassy in Tashkent.

Bachelor’s at a private university
€6,662–20,000 a year
Master’s at a private university
€8,158–20,000 a year or €13,920–16,250 per programme
Foundation
€6,920–13,000 per programme
Public university
usually just a semester contribution; €1,500 per semester in Baden-Württemberg
Blocked account for the visa
€11,904 for the first year (€992 a month)
Visa fee
€75 + the TLScontact service fee
Housing
a Constructor campus room from €1,890 per semester, BSBI partner housing from €599 a month

Many private universities cut the price for good grades or early payment. The money in the blocked account stays yours: the bank releases it at €992 a month for living costs.

Visa

German student visa

You need a national (type D) visa for study. From Uzbekistan you apply through the TLScontact visa centre, and the German Embassy in Tashkent usually decides within 4–6 weeks.

  • An admission letter from the university or Studienkolleg and a certificate in the language of study — IELTS for English-taught programmes.
  • Proof of living funds: €11,904 for the first year, i.e. €992 a month. Usually this is a blocked account (Sperrkonto); a scholarship or a formal sponsor declaration also works.
  • If you are going to a private university, the embassy may ask for a breakdown of your study costs and payment receipts.
  • Private health insurance for the whole visa period and a €75 visa fee. The separate APS certificate required from, for example, China or India is not required for citizens of Uzbekistan.
  • The blocked-account amount is linked to the BAföG student grant and may go up — we check the current figure before you apply.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to study in Germany?
At private universities a bachelor’s costs €6,662–20,000 a year, and a master’s €8,158–20,000 a year or €13,920–16,250 for a 12–18-month programme. On top of that come living costs: for the visa you show €11,904 for the first year. In most states public universities charge only a semester contribution.
Can I go to Germany straight after school in Uzbekistan?
Not to a public university: a school certificate from Uzbekistan gives access only through a Studienkolleg and its Feststellungsprüfung exam, or after a year of successful university study at home. Private universities offer a shorter route — a Foundation at Gisma (6 months) or Constructor University (one year), or BSBI’s foundation year. More on studying abroad after school.
Do I need German?
Not for the English-taught programmes at BSBI, University of Europe, Gisma and Constructor University — you need English instead: IELTS 5.5–6.5 for a bachelor’s. Studienkollegs teach in German, as do many public-university programmes. German will help with part-time work and jobs after graduation either way.
What is a blocked account and how much goes in it?
It’s an account with a German bank from which you can withdraw only a set amount each month. For a visa in 2026 you need €11,904 — €992 a month for the first year. The money stays yours and pays for living costs, but the amount is linked to the BAföG grant and may rise.
Can I work while studying?
Yes: 140 full or 280 half working days a year under the rules in force since 1 March 2024. A part-time job helps with living costs, but it can’t cover tuition or replace the funds you show for the visa.
What happens after I graduate?
After graduating from a German university you can get an 18-month residence permit to look for a job in your field, and you may work without restrictions in the meantime. Once you find a suitable job, you can switch to a work residence permit.
Are there scholarships or discounts?
Yes, private universities have their own discounts. Constructor University automatically considers every applicant for a scholarship of up to €10,000 based on school grades, BSBI cuts bachelor’s fees by up to 50% depending on your grade average, and Gisma gives 35% off to siblings and spouses of students. Awards are competitive — see scholarships to study abroad.
Is there an age limit?
We recommend starting a bachelor’s at 17–27 and a master’s up to 35 — that’s our working experience, not a legal limit. Universities have their own rules: BSBI, for example, admits master’s students from 21. Tell us about yourself and we’ll find an option.
