Why · United Kingdom

Why students choose this country

  1. 01

    A 3-year bachelor’s, a 1-year master’s

In England most bachelor’s programmes take 3 years and a master’s takes 1 year. Compared with a “4 + 2” route, that is two fewer years of tuition and rent. Many universities also offer a version with a year of work placement in a company.

  2. 02

    Strong universities

The University of Southampton is a founding member of the Russell Group and 18th in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2027. Loughborough University is 9th in the same guide and 203rd in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Aston and Hull hold Gold, the top rating, in TEF 2023, the national review of teaching quality.

  3. 03

You can work while you study

On a Student visa, bachelor’s and master’s students can work up to 20 hours a week in term time and full time in the holidays. On a foundation year and other courses below degree level the limit is 10 hours a week.

  4. 04

    Work after you graduate

Bachelor’s and master’s graduates can stay on a Graduate visa to work or look for work: 18 months if they apply on or after 1 January 2027, and 3 years after a PhD.

  5. 05

    Discounts for students from Uzbekistan

The University of Lancashire automatically takes £2,000 a year off the fee for students from Uzbekistan. Other universities have scholarships too: up to £10,000 at Aston and £2,000 a year for high grades at LSBU. These are partial discounts: fully free study is rare.

  6. 06

A city to fit your budget

From London, where life costs the most, to Birmingham, Hull, Sunderland and Preston. For the visa you show £1,570 for each month of living costs in London and £1,203 elsewhere (from 30 November 2026).

Visa

The Student visa

You apply online on the UK government website once the university has issued your CAS, the electronic confirmation of your place. We help you prepare the documents and check that your bank funds are enough.

  • First the university’s offer, then the deposit and your CAS. You can apply for the visa no earlier than 6 months before your course starts.
  • Funds: your first-year fee (minus what you have already paid) plus living costs of £1,203 a month outside London or £1,570 in London, for up to 9 months (£10,827 / £14,130). These amounts apply to applications made from 30 November 2026.
  • The money must stay in the account for at least 28 days in a row, and that period must end within 31 days of your application. The account can be yours or a parent’s, with a letter of consent from the parent.
  • In OPAL’s experience the balance usually needs to be at least $25,000 — we work out the exact figure for your university and city.
  • The visa fee is £558 and the Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 for each year. A decision usually comes in about 3 weeks.
  • Applicants living in Uzbekistan need a tuberculosis test at an approved clinic — in Tashkent this is Tashkent International Clinic.
  • English for the visa: level B2 for a bachelor’s or master’s, B1 for courses below degree level. The university may assess your level itself.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to study in the UK?
At the universities on this page a bachelor’s costs £16,440–34,100 a year and a master’s £16,740–38,100 for the one-year programme (excluding medicine). Add housing (about $500 a month in a shared flat), the £558 visa fee and the £776-a-year health surcharge. We will find a university that fits your budget — get in touch.
Can I go to a UK university straight after Year 11?
Usually not. For example, LSBU and the University of Lancashire admit students from Uzbekistan into year 1 after an international foundation programme or one year at a university in Uzbekistan. So after Year 11 most students start with a one-year foundation. More in our guide Study abroad after school.
Can I study without IELTS?
You almost always need to prove your English: the visa for a bachelor’s or master’s requires level B2. Usually that means IELTS 6.0–6.5, but a university may accept another test or assess you itself. If your score is short, many universities offer pre-sessional English, a language course before the programme starts.
Are there scholarships to study in the UK?
Mostly partial discounts: £2,000 a year automatically at the University of Lancashire for students from Uzbekistan, up to £10,000 at Aston and £2,000 a year for high grades at LSBU. Fully funded study is rare and competitive. Uzbekistan’s El-Yurt Umidi Foundation only pays for universities in the QS or THE top 300 — on this page that means Southampton and Loughborough. More in scholarships to study abroad.
Can I work while studying?
Yes. On a bachelor’s or master’s, up to 20 hours a week in term time and full time in the holidays. On a foundation year and other courses below degree level, up to 10 hours a week. The Student visa does not allow self-employment.
How much money do I need to show for the visa?
Your first-year fee (minus what you have already paid the university) plus living costs: for applications from 30 November 2026, £1,203 a month outside London and £1,570 in London, for up to 9 months. The money must stay in the account for 28 days in a row. In OPAL’s experience this usually comes to at least $25,000.
Where do students live?
In the first year many students choose university halls: about £90–250 a week depending on the city and room, according to the universities. Later many move into a flat with other students — in OPAL’s experience about $500 a month per person. Housing in London costs noticeably more.
Can I stay and work after graduating?
Yes, on a Graduate visa: 18 months after a bachelor’s or master’s (for applications from 1 January 2027) and 3 years after a PhD. You apply from inside the UK while your Student visa is still valid.
