In short. Malaysia suits students who want to study in English, earn a degree with clear quality assurance and spend far less than in the UK or Australia. The downsides are real: after school in Uzbekistan you need a Foundation year or a diploma first, English is not optional, it is hot and humid all year, part-time work is tightly restricted, and the Student Pass has to be renewed every year. Below we go through each point with figures and sources.
Families in Uzbekistan usually compare Malaysia with Korea, Türkiye and Europe. To make that comparison fair, we have listed not only what Malaysia does well but also what agencies tend to skip. Every figure here comes from official university websites, EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services, the government body that handles student visas) or the QS rankings.
The pros of studying in Malaysia
You study in English
According to EMGS, more than 160 higher education institutions in Malaysia teach in English. The national language is Malay, but most people speak English, so a student can manage in a shop, a bank or a hospital without an interpreter. For a school leaver from Tashkent that means two outcomes at once: a profession and working English.
Lower costs than the UK or Australia
A year of a bachelor's in business, IT or engineering at MAHSA University or City University Malaysia costs roughly RM 16,700–24,100, or about $4,100–5,900 (an estimate based on the EasyUni course listings; the exact amount is stated in the university's offer letter). For comparison, undergraduate tuition fees for international students in the UK start at around £10,000 a year, and a bachelor's in Australia costs roughly AU$36,000–50,000 a year.
Living costs are modest too: MAHSA estimates a student's expenses at RM 1,200–1,800 a month, excluding accommodation. For a full breakdown by level of study, see the cost of studying in Malaysia.
Strong public universities
Universiti Malaya is ranked 56th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, the highest position a Malaysian university has ever reached. In total, 32 Malaysian universities made the ranking, and five of them are in the global top 200.
A safe and familiar environment
In the Global Peace Index 2026, Malaysia is 12th out of 163 countries; in Asia only Singapore and Japan rank higher. EMGS describes Malaysia as a modern, Muslim-friendly country with easy access to halal food. Society is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese and Indian communities living side by side. For many parents this is the deciding factor.
A British or Australian degree in Asia
Several foreign universities run branch campuses in Malaysia, including Monash University, the University of Nottingham, Heriot-Watt University and the University of Southampton. Students follow the parent university's programme while living in Malaysia. These campuses set their own fees, so compare them separately.
A clear ladder of qualifications
A Foundation programme takes one year and leads into the first year of a bachelor's degree. A diploma takes 2–3 years and can give entry straight into the second year of a degree (depending on the programme). A bachelor's takes 3–4 years, while medicine and dentistry take five. You can choose a shorter or longer route to fit your budget and grades.
The cons and challenges
You cannot go straight into a bachelor's after grade 11
EMGS requires at least 12 years of education for a diploma or degree, while school in Uzbekistan lasts 11 years. A school leaver therefore needs a Foundation year (about one year) or a diploma programme first. That adds a year to both the timeline and the budget. We explain how to plan this route in studying abroad after school.
English is not optional
An English certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge and others) is attached to the visa application. Without one, processing can take longer and the Student Pass will not cover the full length of the course. If a student's English is still weak, universities offer intensive English: MAHSA, for example, runs a free diagnostic test and places students in its English programme based on the result. But that means extra months and extra money.
Heat and humidity all year round
Daytime temperatures are around 28 °C and humidity is about 80% all year, with no seasons like those in Tashkent. Some students adjust within a couple of weeks; for others the first months are hard. It is worth talking this through with your child in advance.
Part-time work is tightly restricted
Can international students work in Malaysia? Yes, but only up to 20 hours a week and, under EMGS rules, only during semester breaks or holidays longer than seven days. The list of permitted workplaces is short: restaurants, petrol stations, mini markets, hotels and university premises. Approval comes from the Immigration Department, and breaking the rules can cost a student their Student Pass. A family budget should never depend on part-time income.
Paperwork every year
The Student Pass is usually issued for up to one year at a time and renewed annually. Insurance is compulsory for the entire period of study, and new students must have a medical screening within seven working days of arrival. Compulsory EMGS payments in the first year come to about RM 2,858–3,004 (roughly $700–740). The step-by-step process is on our page on how to apply to a university in Malaysia.
A private university is not a top-ranked one
MAHSA and City University are private universities, while the upper part of the QS table is mostly public universities. This matters for recognition in Uzbekistan: degrees from universities on the annually approved top-1,000 list (QS, THE, ARWU) are usually recognised without a test; in other cases a test in the specialist subjects may be set. Check the status of the specific university before you apply.
Medicine: internships in Malaysia are for citizens only
MAHSA states plainly that housemanship (the medical internship) in Malaysia is open to Malaysian citizens only. International graduates receive their degree and may sit the licensing exams to practise in other countries. Check the rules for doctors in Uzbekistan separately. It is a long way from home
The flight home takes many hours and is a noticeable expense, especially in the holiday season. Budget for at least one trip home a year.

Is a Malaysian degree prestigious?
Prestige depends on the university and the programme, not the country. Universiti Malaya and the other universities in the global top 200 are known well beyond Malaysia. Private universities are measured in other ways: MQA accreditation, the QS Stars rating and Malaysia's national SETARA rating. City University Malaysia, for example, holds a 5-star QS Stars rating. An employer in Tashkent will usually look at the subject, the level of English and work experience, not just the country on the diploma.
Is Malaysia good for education?
Quality in higher education is overseen by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Every accredited programme has a code you can look up in the public Malaysian Qualifications Register at mqa.gov.my. That is the simplest way to check that a programme is genuine and current. Standards at private universities vary: one may be strong in medicine, another in business or IT. Compare programmes rather than the country as a whole. For an overview of universities and subjects, see study in Malaysia.
How to read reviews of studying in Malaysia
Forum reviews are useful, but each one describes a single university, year and budget. To check things for yourself:
- Find the programme in the MQA register and check its code and accreditation dates.
- Make sure the offer letter was issued by the university itself.
- Pay only the university: City University, for example, warns that fees should not be paid to anyone else.
- Work out the full annual budget: tuition fees, housing, food, visa, insurance and flights.
- Ask the university or your consultant to put you in touch with a current student on the same programme.
Who Malaysia suits, and who it does not
It is a good fit if:
- your child is ready to study in English, or to raise their level within six months to a year;
- safety, halal food and a budget below European levels matter to your family;
- the chosen subject leads to the career you want: medicine, business, IT or engineering.
It is probably not the right fit if:
- you need a free university with no entry requirements;
- the student plans to pay for their studies by working;
- they cope badly with heat and humidity.
Frequently asked questions
Is studying in Malaysia worth it after school in Uzbekistan?
Yes, if you plan for a Foundation year and English preparation from the start. The route to a bachelor's degree then takes four to five years, and the total cost is usually lower than in the UK or Australia.
How much is university in Malaysia per year?
A bachelor's in business, IT or engineering at MAHSA or City University costs about RM 16,700–24,100 a year, plus living costs from RM 1,200–1,800 a month excluding accommodation. Medicine costs considerably more. The university states the exact fee in the offer letter.
Can I study in Malaysia without IELTS?
You can start with a university English programme: MAHSA, for example, assesses your level with a free diagnostic test. But EMGS asks for a recognised English certificate for the visa, and without one the Student Pass will not cover the full course. It is best to have the certificate before the main programme starts.
Can international students work in Malaysia while studying?
Only during breaks longer than seven days, for up to 20 hours a week, in approved workplaces and with Immigration Department approval.
Is a Malaysian degree recognised in Uzbekistan?
Recognition is handled through my.gov.uz by the Agency for Assessment of Knowledge and Qualifications. Degrees from universities on the approved top-1,000 list are usually recognised without a test; others may require a test in the specialist subjects.
Is Malaysia safe for international students?
Malaysia is 12th out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index 2026. The usual big-city precautions still apply.
